when it comes to being one alternative christmas treeI’m definitely a skeptic. As someone who was just a Boy Sad to learn that her mom had replaced a real Christmas tree with an artificial one a few years ago, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about another tree option.
However, creating a Christmas tree on the wall is not only a great way to be creative during the holiday season, but it can also look incredibly design-led.
I’m a big fan of true evergreens, but there’s something to be said for creating a new tradition. If you’re interested in a wall-mounted version of your own twinkling tree, here are the steps to make it with garland — plus some other ideas using lights, ornaments, and branches.
How to make a Christmas tree on the wall

There are many different options for making a Christmas tree on the wall, which is what makes this DIY so dynamic. This means that every year you can have a different theme or color palette and adopt different materials.

Supplies you will need
- fake evergreen Garland (or actual branches from either evergreen trees or cedar)
- Adhesive hooks or tape that are safe for painted walls
- string lights
- Jewelery of your choice
Step #1: Find and Clear Your Wall
Find a wall that is large enough to string the garland through and that is not obstructed by furniture. Usually at least 3 feet x 3 feet is best (but more space gives you enough room to make as big a tree as you want). If there is dirt or grease on the wall, take some time to wipe it off so that your tape or hooks stick well.
Step #2: Create an outline
Use tape or string to create your initial outline. This will make it easier to arrange and keep your garland in the shape of a Christmas tree instead of just attaching feathers. Once you’ve done this, you can attach your adhesive hooks if you are using this method. Otherwise, go to the next step.
Step #3: Hang the Garland
Start arranging your garland or branches. If you’re using a faux evergreen garland, work your way from the bottom up, pull out the length of the garland, then wrap it back over itself to create the next row.
If you are using real branches, arrange them by making the longest row of branches at the bottom, then make several other rows of branches in decreasing length until you have a small piece left that will form your “tree.” represents the top of.
Use heavy-duty tape or small adhesive hooks to keep everything in place.
Step #4: Make Adjustments and Strengthen It
Now is the time when you can make edits to your tree. Check to see that the garland is even and correct any crooked areas. If you find that some parts have become loose, you can also strengthen it by adding additional hooks or tape.
Step #5: Add Decorations
You can leave your tree as is, or you can add a little festive magic with lights, jewelryGarlands, or natural elements like fruits or flowers. Hang just a few of the “branches” you made (so you don’t overload it).

You can leave it in its simplest form, or add some silver, gold or colorful ornaments to give it a Christmas tree look.
