The second part of Ojuolep’s design workshop focused on materiality and closure, following the first part which explored the themes of narrative and experience.
The practice of Ojuolep is known for its use of clay, tactile materials. “Materiality is really important in everything we do as a practice,” he said in a video workshop filmed at Dezeen’s offices in London.
He adds, “We love warm cozy interiors, and we always pay attention to tactile finishes and reference different colors to get the right aesthetic.”
During the workshop, Ojuolepe discussed how SketchUp can be used to visualize a space with rich use of materials, demonstrating how real-world textures can be imported into the software and Can be applied to surfaces.
He also demonstrated how SketchUp’s Ambient Occlusion feature can be turned on to view 3D models with shadows, highlighting the dimensions of a space and the relationships between various objects.
Elsewhere, Ojuolep shows how SketchUp allows a model to be viewed in different lighting conditions.
Ojuolape is a multidisciplinary designer based in London and the founder of the eponymous practice Tola Ojuolape Studio. At the 2023 Dezeen Awards, she was selected and a judge for Emerging Interior Designer of the Year.
