United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby on Friday blamed the disruption of air traffic controller staff and the disruption on technology problems of Federal aviation administration, saying that this week will cancel 35 rounds of flights in New Jersey after facing a delay of hours to thousands of passengers this week.
Flight cut about 10% of the daily program of United in its Newark Hub.
According to flight-tracking site flightware, more than 300 flights were delayed by Friday afternoon, adding more than 1,400 other delays and cancellations earlier this week.
Kirby said in a note on Friday, “It is disappointing to further cut the low schedule in Newark already, but since there is no way to resolve the structural FAA staffing issues of near-term, we think we feel that there is no other option to protect our customers.”
The schedule cuts will begin at the end of this week.
Kirby said that 20% of air traffic controllers for Newarark “stopped jobs” in recent times after several technology failures.
“Keep in mind, this special air traffic control facility has been understood for years in a chronological and without these controllers, it is now clear – and FAA tells us – Newark Airport cannot handle the number of aircraft that are determined to operate there and in months,” he said.
The FAA said in an advice that the issues of staffing were delaying operations in Newark on Friday.
Kirby said that the airline is now urging the agency to establish flight restrictions on other highly congested facilities like Lagardia Airport in New York and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The FAA and the Transport Department did not immediately respond to the requests for comments. The Air Traffic Controllers Union refused to comment.

Kirby said that he spoke with Transport Secretary Sean Dafi on Friday and praised the Trump administration for investing and fixing the rising air traffic control infrastructure in the US.
United said on Thursday that FAA Technology Outage, Runway Construction and High Winds created disruption, forcing it to remove at least 21 flights.
