Google is working on a feature to deal with motion sickness when users interact with their devices in moving vehicles. The “Motion Cues” feature has not yet been released on Android but was activated prior to release.
Motion sickness is common for users, so much so that Apple has already implemented its own motion sickness preventer in iOS 18, called Vehicle Motion Cues. Although this may not completely prevent users from feeling uneasy while riding in a car or other transportation, it definitely helps and can make sending or reading some emails much easier.
It appears that Google is working on a similar feature for Android (via Google). Android Authority The Motion Cues feature was activated in an APK dissection, which means the feature has not been released, and there’s really no telling if it will or not. This is something that Google is apparently testing in a closed environment.
Android Authority was able to activate Motion Cues through the Google Play Store beta (v24.29.32). By doing so, a new toggle appears in Settings under the name “Motion Cues.” Once activated, this feature adds about 14 pairs of tiny dots to the screen. The dots will move with the phone’s speed and ground the user in reference to the vehicle’s speed.
The tool also has an automatic toggle when Android detects that the user is in a vehicle, though the setting is labeled “Auto-Enable While Driving.” This in itself is a sign that the feature is not ready for primetime, given that drivers will not be encouraged to use their devices enough to avoid motion sickness while driving.
Motion cues in Android need to ask for permission to display on other apps. In its working state, those little moving dots will be visible everywhere and should soothe feelings of motion sickness in some way or the other.
Again, it doesn’t look like the feature is ready, although there are more signs emerging. There’s no word on when this feature will come to Android, though it’s welcome.
