- Check your windows and doors for any weak spots that can be unsafe for high winds and water leaks.
- The clear gutter of any buildup so that there is no potential clogue and redestion away from your home.

If you live in the midwest, south or east, it may be the time to start your house for a serious season that is coming quickly. Strong tornado, high winds, and some hailstorms are expected to hit these areas, so you must be well equipped to deal then, but your home and garden must be stormy to reduce any damage.
We asked Home Reno professionals to share their best suggestions, so read below.
Clear gutter
If you have not checked on your gutter once throughout this season, it can be worthwhile to see and see if there is a buildup before storms. Michael Dimartino, SVP of Installation at Power Home remodeling, explains how clogged gutters can cause major leakage and damage to both the interior and exterior of your home.
“When the gutter is filled with leaves and sticks, it prevents water from avoiding properly and can potentially give rise to ice dams,” called Dimartino. “If the water cannot exit properly, it can give rise to collected rainfall, which colds and adds unnecessary weight and stress to the gutter.”
Miles Robinson, the founder and home expert of the UK Composite Doors, agrees and ensures that at least a few feet away from the foundation of your house straighten water directly.
This will prevent water pooling near your house during the storm, which can often cause flood or foundation damage in the basement, called Robinson.

Safe outdoor items
Robinson suggests that the courtyard should secure or store light items such as furniture, umbrellas, or plant utensils as they can be dangerous when there are high winds.
Additionally, if you have a raised beds or large planters, Robinson recommends anchoring them or taking them to shelter areas.
Dimartino says that even to secure fire pits, chairs, tables, grills, and more, Dimartino is called. Ensure that these items are a good distance from your outer walls as high winds can cause these objects to create an effect, resulting in torn vinyl siding and broken windows.
Check for weak spots
Take a look around your house to see if there are any weak spots around your windows or doors. Robinson says that consider weather stripping to prevent wind -run rain from leaking.
“The shutter or effect-resistant windows of the storm are worth investing in areas suffering from tornado or strong winds,” says Robinson.
Additionally, Robinson has recommended a double-check of any door for the basement or gardens to ensure that they are tightly sealed and that no proximal drainage flows towards them.
Maintain some garden
Dimartino has advised to bring back any overgrowth from branches or bushes to prevent them from pushing against windows by high winds and causing small scuffs.
Robinson explains, “It is also smart to trim back the organs of any dead or overhangling tree; it reduces the possibility of reducing roof, vehicles or fencing branches during a storm,” Robinson says.
