velvet jewelry
One of the Christmas decor trends of the ’90s, Wagner says she’s excited to hang velvet ornaments on her tree in her home this season.
“One of my favorite decor items of the moment is velvet upholstery. The rich texture and soft sheen evoke a vintage charm that feels both elegant and comfortable,” says Wagner. “They pair beautifully with classic holiday colors and add a luxurious yet accessible touch.”
On top of the velvet ornaments, Wagner says she plans to add more of this texture to her tree in the form of ribbon or other velvet accents.
She adds, “It brings timeless glamor to the season without feeling overly trendy.” “The texture alone adds a cozy, festive feel to any holiday arrangement.”
personalized jewelry
Not fond of velvet jewelry but keep containers full of personalized ornamentsYou’re in luck; Calderon says personalized ornaments from your childhood are the best way to get in on this trend if you still have them.
“A Rugrats ornament, a ballet slipper with the year on it representing your first dance class… maybe you even have your first baby ornament,” Calderon says of the fact that that’s what your decor is all about. Makes it nostalgic and personalized ±two features ’90s Christmas were all about.
animated Santa Claus
If you don’t have any family-favorite Christmas decoration items from the ’90s, chances are you can find some at local thrift stores or secondhand shops, or on eBay, according to Wilson, if you look for them. For Wilson, the highlight of her favorite Christmas decoration is an animated Santa Claus that she grew up with this decade.
“I grew up in the ’90s, so my family has a lot of things from that era. One of my favorites is the animated Santa Claus who walks by with a burning candle — we love bringing it out every year !” She says.
home alone inspiration
Who doesn’t love this decade’s iconic holiday movies? If you need help gathering inspiration to fill your home with Christmas nostalgia, Wilson says the perfect movie to channel is Home Alone. Although she says some decorations may seem a bit exaggerated now, there are some elements you can easily incorporate into your home.
“For example, for the tree, Kevin decorates with shiny metallic colored balls and colored lights,” shares Wilson. “If you think about the parents’ bedroom, they had monochromatic red bedding and also used a lot of hunter green and plaid.”
Wilson says the perfect place to incorporate these colors and patterns is your table settings and Christmas serveware.
“Another easy, fun way to incorporate vintage items is glassware for the bar,” she says. “They make great conversation pieces when you’re hosting.”
decorated christmas tree
And of course, who can’t forget the iconic Christmas tree decorations of the 90s? If you’re keeping your tree modern with a color scheme or minimalist inspiration, Calderon says this is the year to go for ’90s trees decorated with multi-colored lights (sorry, white lights!), tinsel. It’s time to look back. , and more.
“We’re likely to see lots of multi-colored lights, tinsel and icicles garlands, glass ball ornaments, angel tree toppers, touches of plaid and velvet, and socks with family members’ names on them,” she says.
How to modernize your old Christmas decorations
While ’90s Christmas decor is definitely cozy and fun, you may want to keep your space fresh by mixing these staples with modern elements.
“When styling these pieces, I would suggest pairing them with more timeless elements — like natural greenery or classic metallics — so they don’t seem overly themed,” says Wagner. “The key is to mix them with modern or neutral decor, which will keep your space feeling fresh while still maintaining that ’90s vibe.”
