decorate with ribbon
One of the easiest ways to add a touch of the holidays to your decor is with ribbon. Candace Plotz, founder and principal designer of Candace Plotz Design, suggests taking everyday items and putting a bow on them.
“Everyday items are instantly elevated with a simple spool of ribbon. Whether added to candles, greenery, or even used to hang a picture, a beautiful bow creates a sense of grandeur,” she said.
Add a holiday ribbon to candle holders and vases, or even wrap it around the backs of chairs for a touch of beauty. Ribbons in classic holiday colors – red, green, gold, or silver – can jazz up even the simplest decorations.
The best part? You can change the ribbon colors and patterns every year for an easy update.

Fresh greenery in stylish pots
Nothing says holiday charm like fresh greenery, and it’s an excellent alternative to the traditional tree. Plotz recommends using fresh greenery, especially in small spaces where a large tree might overwhelm.
“Fresh greenery in beautiful vessels is a great way to bring the holiday spirit indoors, adding texture and creating a cozy, natural environment,” Plotz said.
Try arranging cedar branches, eucalyptus, or even holly in a vase or decorative pot. Place these arrangements on a table, mantle, or entryway to bring the scent and feel of the season into your home without taking up too much space.
Comfortable with nature’s texture
Incorporating natural elements like pinecones, wood pieces and cranberries adds warmth to your decor without the need for a tree.
“Nothing says holidays quite like the organic beauty of nature – whether it’s the texture of a pinecone, the warmth of wood, or the rich colors of cranberries,” Plotz said.
Consider filling glass jars or bowls with pinecones and sprigs of greenery, or hang a cranberry garland on a window. Using these elements in your decor is an easy, affordable way to bring the outdoors inside and create a festive atmosphere.
wrap your tv in garland
Renter-friendly interior design influencer Shelby Turner has a clever trick for making small spaces feel cheerful and bright.
“When I was living in a 400-square-foot apartment, I couldn’t even plant a tree,” explains Turner. And lit Christmas tree-scented candles. Felt just like a vacation!”
This idea is perfect for small spaces or rented homes where wall space is at a premium. By simply wrapping garland around your television and using lighting scented candlesYou can create a cozy holiday setup that requires minimal space. Consider using battery-powered garland to avoid wires and add hassle-free holiday sparkle.
Create a Festive Centerpiece
Another easy way to bring the holiday spirit to your space is with a festive centerpiece. You can keep it as simple or elaborate as you want – combine elements like candles, greenery and baubles to create an eye-catching table display.
Use items like evergreen branches, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and ornaments to put together a natural-looking centerpiece. Adding a few candles to the mix adds warmth and comfort to the arrangement.
Plus, a centerpiece can be a great way to focus on the holiday charm of your table by diverting attention away from the absence of a tree.
Hang seasonal wall art or wreaths
seasonal wall art or a wreath A great way to bring holiday cheer without taking up floor space. If you prefer a minimalist look, choose subtle, nature-inspired prints or typography-based designs. Otherwise, choose vibrant holiday colors or fantasy artwork.
Wreaths can also add a festive touch to doors or walls. For a unique twist, hang the wreath above the fireplace or entryway indoors.
You can also make your own using natural ingredients like dried oranges, pinecones, and eucalyptus to create a lovely scent.
Go for a fake fireplace
If you’re really missing the ambiance that a tree provides, consider a faux fireplace setup. With a little creativity, you can create a charming floating fireplace that serves as the centerpiece of your holiday decorations.
Arrange a series of flameless candles on a shelf or create a faux mantel using stacked crates. Wrap garland, hang stockings and add some decorative sticks to complete the look.
To create an authentic fireplace experience, light some cinnamon or pine-scented candles around your setup. You can also place a portable heater nearby to complete the cozy atmosphere. A faux fireplace provides all the seasonal charm and warmth of a traditional setup without the need for a large tree.
“The holidays are all about feeling cozy and creating a joyful atmosphere,” says Plotz. “With a few thoughtful details, you can bring that feeling into your home—no tree required.”
