You have higher shutter speed than expected


It is important to know what the shutter speed does, it is important to control your images. It is not just how it affects the exposure, but changing the shutter speed has a knock-on effect that can dramatically change the form of a photo. Here is an explanation and attempt to do some practice for you.

The big temptation for photographers is to go from one peak to another. A sharp shutter can prevent movement, show movement, or even blur that it disappears a moving subject. However, many people do not realize microscopic nuances that can be achieved by changing the time of opening the shutter by only one or two stops.

However, the speed you have chosen is determined by factors other than only exposure.

Proximity

First, the proximity to the moving subject for the camera. Imagine that you are sitting in a car and looking through the side window. The road near you runs so quickly that it becomes blurred. As a result, you cannot identify any feature on the surface of the road. Meanwhile, the distant landscape passes more leisurely. Therefore, to prevent the speed of a close object, you will need fast shutter speed.

Exercise 1

Set your lens for 1/60 seconds at its wide angle and camera shutter speed. This motion estimates the perception of human eye. Get a friend or family member to stand at a distance of about 20 yards and to wave on you. Take a picture.

Now ask them to reduce the distance and, take another shot, without changing any camera settings. Then, recreate the distance again, and repeat until they are some yards away. Inspect what the blur of their hand is because they come close to you.

Focal length effect

The same applies to using wide angle or telephoto lens. A moving subject that slowly passes across the frame with a 12 mm lens, will go into a nap with a long lens, so a sharp shutter is required. Exercise 2

Repeat the above exercise, but now get your friend to stand at a distance of about five yards. Moving forward instead, they zoom on your hand as a wave.

Your camera makes a difference

The crop factor of your camera will also affect the amount of spots in a shot. A slow shutter speed on the 35 mm sensor camera requires the same amount of speed of speed, as you consider the same focal length and theme distance with a micro for third (MFT) camera. Same photo at different shutter speed

Here is an example of the same photo shot at different shutter speed. I shot these pictures for this article on the west coast of Scotland. There, the weather changes every few minutes. Therefore, the aperture and ISO settings differ slightly between shots to achieve the required shutter speed. In addition, to reach some fastest shutter speed, I opened the aperture for f/2.8. As a result, the depth of the region also varies.

Let’s start with this version. This is a 75-second exposure shot on F/5.6, ISO 200, using a combination URTH Plus+ ND1000 Filter And inherent of camera Om -1 mark II Live ND feature, inbuilt ND filter. The water is completely blurred.

Next, I removed the ND1000 filter and only used Live ND. There is a 5-second version of the same shot here. There is little difference between this and the previous version because the fast -moving water sets a long way in the frame, but the close inspection reflects some definition of water drops.

In 3.2 seconds, water has a small amount of additional definition, but it is barely noticeable.

The following was shot in two seconds. Then, there was not much change.

The next shot was a second exposure. Then, the difference is minuscule.

From now on, we will start seeing a slight more difference in water between each increase in shutter speed. Here is half a second.

Then on 1/8th of a second. There is even more expansion in water.

There is a point when the shutter speeds the speed action, and any further increase makes very little difference in the photo. In comparison, the picture on the left was shot at 1/1,000 seconds and on the right, 1/3,200 seconds. They look very similar.

A note about the word shutter speed

The mechanical shutter of your camera is made from two curtains; After one opens, the other closes. They move at the same speed, but the time difference between them changes. I think that is why the canon cameras rejected the universal “S” otherwise on the mode dial for shutter priority and used “TV” for time value instead. Nevertheless, most photography uses the world “shutter speed”. A good mechanical shutter will give you a speed of 1/8,000 seconds or more.

With electronic or silent shutters, curtains remain open, and the sensor is scanned electronically. Electronic shutters usually gain very fast shutter speed.

Do you like long exposure?

Like any approach in photography, it comes to long exposure. The ease of which the shutters reach extremely high speed-very long exposure like 7/32,000 seconds and above 7.6 minutes of shots on my camera make this type of photography easier than ever.

Also, just because you cannot mean it. I could choose a long exposure for the next photo; I like the effect of long exposure on water as it reduces the scene. But in this case, I preferred to watch the movement of water.

Long exposures are not only for landscape

Three other factors determine your shutter speed: aperture, ISO settings, and the amount of light entering the camera from the lens.
