Unmarked graves marked at former residential school site near The Pas – Winnipeg


There are traces of unmarked graves at the site of a former Opaskwayak Cree Nation residential school near The Pas.

Community leaders announced Friday the findings of a specialized grave search team and human remains detection dogs on the grounds of the former Mckay Indian Residential School.

The dogs indicated six areas of interest, and the next step is to confirm this with ground-penetrating radar.

“I didn’t think the work would be so emotional, when the dogs barked it meant they had found something,” said OCN adviser Edwin Jebb.

“The emotions rose from my stomach to my throat and my knees buckled. I was overwhelmed by the emotion caused by the dogs working,”

The boarding school was in operation from 1914 to 1933.
