Look, we’re not trying to do anything crazy here. When it comes to shopping for the New Year, I’m not looking to reinvent the wheel. Sure, I’ll inevitably come up with something fun, unexpected (possibly) elegant?) Shopping that keeps things interesting — but for the most part, this season’s shopping is all about finding of-the-moment updates to classic staples I wear again and again.
If you’re like me, you keep your wardrobe in a reliable little capsule of seasonal items. In my world, fall means my favorite denim, tailored pants, nice jacketA trench coat, chic flats, light knits, and several basic tops that work well in layers. There are new changes coming constantly, but in the context of highly wearable updates for them timeless staplesThese 35 fresh items are my favorites.
trench coat
My old trench has finally given up the ghost, so I’m thinking of replacing it with something similar. I usually look for the perfect slouchy fit in the men’s section, but there are plenty of plus size options in women’s clothing.
denim
I’ve mentioned many times that I think creamy jeans are a great choice for any time of year, despite it being known as a spring/summer staple. I know by now that casual denim is permanently my jam, and as long as the length works with flats, I’m up for any rise and hem.
jacket
There are lots of great outerwear available right now! From wool to vegan leather and suede, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to resist when it comes to slightly cropped styles. As I’m just trying to settle on one good purchase, please enjoy these five excellent items that honestly deserve a spot in my wardrobe.
basic top
I actually went to town wearing a long-sleeve ribbed T-shirt last year, and I have no regrets — I love Chandler & Ross’s energy of getting the white neckline peeking out from under the knitted sweater. Now I’m short on some more classic tees, and am specifically looking for some diverse colors and heavier weights.
flats
I actually thought I was the anti-Mary Janes (on myself, love them on other people), until I saw J.J. Didn’t find a very nice slingback version in the crew. So maybe it’s time for a regular pairing? Classic leather in neutral tones, or perhaps a suede-effect style – and in the outer lane, a colorful velvet option that goes with nothing (and therefore everything).
trousers
By now I’ve owned a lot of polished trousers – in fact last year I found a pair from Frankie Shop that I liked so much that I bought them in both navy and deep burgundy colours. But that doesn’t mean I’m not on the lookout for new tailored pairs, ranging from wide foot to slightly straight, and obviously a good length to wear with all my favorite flats.
knit
Between my light Nordstrom cashmere and this Great The heavy Totem style I got last year has me committing to V-neck sweaters for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, I’m on the lookout for elevated cardigans — especially (but not exclusively) chic crewneck styles.
