OWC Atlas CFExpress Type A Memory Card is one of petapixelbut OWC has found a problem with the card, and customers are advised to update their card’s firmware as soon as possible. The good news is that the card data is safe.

It’s been a tumultuous time for memory cards recently. earlier this month, petapixel reported this Some SanDisk SD cards will be corrupted When used on a Canon EOS R5 Mark II camera. Sony has added more CFexpress Type A cards this week to its ongoing repair program To resolve the issue of card locking in cold temperatures. Luckily, like Sony’s CFexpress Type A issue, OWC has a free solution.

During ongoing quality assurance testing with its Atlas CFExpress Type A memory cards, OWC discovered an unusual bug. After extended, continuous use, the card may lock up. OWC states that this only occurs during “extreme” usage, which it describes as an “edge case”, but it is technically possible to experience the problem.

If a user pushes their Atlas CFexpress Type A card to this extreme and runs into trouble, it will no longer be usable. However, OWC states that the card data is not lost or inaccessible; It’s just that new data cannot be written to the card until the problem is resolved.

For users who have not had any problems, the solution is straightforward, although not convenient. They can update their card’s firmware using OWC’s free Energize software. However, users must have an OWC Atlas memory card reader to do this. Users should transfer any images or data from their card before doing so.

If anyone does not have an OWC Atlas memory card reader, they are advised to Contact OWC Support TeamAfter which they will either be provided access to the required card reader or advised to send their card to OWC for firmware update. OWC will cover shipping both ways.

Those who already find themselves in the “Extreme Age Case” camp, whose card has become unusable, will have to send the card to OWC. The company assures customers that the data on the card is secure, even if their camera and computer cannot recognize the card.

OWC says, “Once received by our team, we are able to update and fully restore utility, including access to all data on your card.”

The company further says, “Of course, it is better to prevent the risk of such inconvenience and hence, we strongly suggest that you please update the firmware of your card now.”
