Photographer’s grim discovery inside abandoned funeral home prompts police investigation

Photographer Ben James discovered more than 30 bags of bodies and a fetus inside an abandoned funeral home near Atlanta.

A photographer’s terrifying discovery inside an abandoned funeral home has sparked a police investigation after he took pictures of human remains at the site.

Traveling photographer Ben James found dozens of cremated ashes, as well as a human fetus, inside the Norman Medford Peden Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta, Georgia.

According for local reportsSix agencies are now investigating and searching for family members after James received bank statements from people who paid for his burial.

“I had no idea there were so many ash cans,” James says. petapixel“I’m used to a few per location but this was over 30 boxes. It was quite surreal to see a human fetus but that’s the way of these places, you never know what you’ll find.”

A room with an open, damaged ceiling showing broken beams. The floor is littered with debris. Several open coffins have been arranged on the carpet. Light filters through the damaged ceiling and casts shadows on the scene.
The funeral home has been badly damaged after a fire earlier this year, with the roof partially collapsing.

A partially open coffin was kept in a room and debris was scattered on the floor. The ceiling has been damaged and large pieces have hung down, exposing the insulation. The walls are bare and a few empty cabinets are visible.

The funeral home closed after a fire destroyed the building in April and has since housed 35 boxes of bodies inside, along with death certificates and personal information.

“There are boxes, there are folders, there are file drawers. Marietta Police Officer Chuck McPhillamy said, “There are certainly large amounts of chemicals in a fully functioning funeral home, embalming area and anything you can imagine in a crematorium.” says Fox5 Atlanta.

James says, “As far as I know, when it was closed it was understood that there was nothing inside as far as remains, so that was a lie and they were embarrassed that they found out.” “The owner has apparently absconded with some money and has not been able to be traced. Just a wonderful but original exploration.”

Authorities are now trying to locate the families of those affected while determining whether any criminal offenses occurred.
