Pearla brings Open Gate Shoot and Log video modes to iPhone

Parla version 2.1 allows iPhone filmmakers to shoot in open gate formats and record log video, including shooting in open gate and log formats, including S-Log and N-Log.

House of Mars, Creator of Parla Camera app for iPhoneannounced a new update that brings a variety of professional cinema features to all iPhone models. Available to any iPhone user running iOS 17 and above, the latest update allows open-gate shooting and log video modes. Currently, color profiles include Sony S-Log 3 and Nikon N-Log. Additionally, the Pearl app’s baked-in film simulation can be applied to video as well.

“Photographers have been desperate for camera manufacturers to implement an iPhone-like user experience. Meanwhile, iPhone hardware began to meet the needs of professional creators,” says House of Mars founder Guy Cassidy. “When we launched Perla, we did something no other camera app had done. We went straight to the camera sensor and implemented our own photo development pipeline. Now we are doing the same for videos as well.”

In the video below, House of Mars demonstrates Pearl 2.1’s S-Log 3 profile against the latest Apple Log available on the iPhone 16 Pro.

At first glance, the Pearl footage appears to be almost a full stop darker than the original Apple Log footage. Thus, it is unclear whether the app is actually unlocking the full log space potential of the image sensor or whether it is simply implementing a flat curve within the low dynamic range of a standard camera. Either way, the end result is still quite impressive, and the footage would undoubtedly pass the eyeball test if cut into larger pieces.

As Apple continues to add professional video functionality to its latest iPhone modelsIt’s going to be interesting to watch as third-party camera app makers continue to push the limits of the physical hardware in these devices.

“With Parla 2.1, you can get an iPhone SE and shoot 4k, open gate, ProRes 422 video, calibrated to match your Sony S-Log3 footage. It’s the pocket 4K cinema camera we’ve always wanted,” says Cassidy.

The new Perl 2.1 update will be available in January. As House of Mars has consistently demonstrated with Perla, there’s a lot of love for photographers, too. Recent V2 Update Expanded controls for photographers were introduced, including several new ways to improve image quality.
