More carbon capture projects expected to be approved soon, federal minister says
Federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson said he expects between 20 and 25 commercial-scale projects carbon capture and storage projects that should see the light of day in Canada over the next decade.
Wilkinson made the comments in an interview in Calgary a week after Shell Canada has announced that it will continue its Polaris carbon capture project in Alberta.
Shell’s decision to greenlight the project comes on the heels of a new federal tax credit for carbon capture and storage investment receiving royal assent. Companies can now apply for and benefit from the tax credit.
Wilkinson said he expects other companies to make positive final investment decisions on carbon capture “in the coming months.”
Wilkinson says he remains confident that the carbon capture and storage network proposed by Pathways Alliance will ultimately be implemented.
If built, the $16.5 billion project, led by a group of oil sands companies, would be one of the largest carbon capture and storage projects in the world.
