Since the smartphone has made photography more accessible than ever before, a small Japanese company is taking a fundamentally different approach to capture memories. Qi cameraLaunched in Japan at the end of 2024 and is now available for pre-order in the United States, wanted to challenge our relationship with digital memories through a conspiracy, restrictive design philosophy.
What is Kyu camera?
Born in Kyoto, Japan in 2022, QU is just more than another camera manufacturer – it’s a company with a mission to change how we preserve our most precious moments. Its first product, Kyu camera, is an elegant, orb-shaped device designed by a pre-canon employee (and supported by almost every other camera company) that removes the complexity of modern cameras to focus on a simple goal: capturing meaningful memories.
The minimum design of the Kyu camera has a 13-megapixel primary sensor and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera at the back. The 1.5 -inch spherical LED touchscreen, a small microphone, and a single button include the entire front interface. That’s it.
The simplicity of the camera is intentionally – there is no learning state or complex settings to master: Just focus pure focus on capturing the moment. These are deliberate boundaries that make the Kyu camera unique. The biggest of these boundaries is that users can record up to nine seconds in video clips, with only 27 videos daily limits. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Number nine (or “q” in Japanese) is central for the company’s philosophy, represents a sweet place between capturing a moment’s essence and maintaining manageable materials.
Both cameras record 30 frames per second (FPS) in 1: 1 square aspect ratio at 1080p. Although it cannot compete with the latest smartphone cameras, the quality of the video is effectively as good as it should be for the intended purpose. It also confirms Q philosophy that the emotional value of a memory matters more than technical perfection.
The Kyu camera also does not take the photo: it only captures the video. In addition, everything is managed on camera with the same button.
“When considering updates for Kyu, the features we do not include are as important as we include,”. “For example, we do not provide video editing tools to express creativity. There is no advertisement. There is no endless scrolling feed with unnecessarily emotionally stimulating materials. ‘Kyu app’ makes the recorded video to systematic and share.”
Once you capture the memories, you can easily separate the 32GB memory unit from the bottom of the camera and plug it directly into your phone (via USB-C) to offload the footage directly. Camera couples with the KYU app to help you organize all your video clips in the respective days and it can highlight the reels of your clip together for you.
The unique form of the camera, while aesthetically symbolizes a mutual relationship of pleasing and circular memories, only presents a minor opportunity for improvement. I often found myself worried that I would leave the Kyu camera, while using it how smooth and round the edges are made. It would be good to see ergonomic features, such as finger grooves, rubber traction pads, or wrist strap, will be addressed by the cuckoo team in future repetitions.
Kyu camera review: app experience
With all cameras of this generation, the Kyu camera comes with a related app that fulfills the experience. Once you take the video on your Kyu camera, you can separate the removable memory unit and plug it directly into your phone. The memory unit is automatically detected by the app and it will start downloading all your videos immediately. The download speed is a bit slow, as much as I want it, but it is easy to set and forget it until it is completed.
My early experience with the app was a bit confusing, but I later came to know that it was due to the user’s error, as contrary to the lump sum defects. The problem now is that the app explains the user properly, which can be disappointing. Although this can be done relatively easily, I will not keep it against the company at this level.
After a clear interaction with the founder during the review process, deliberate design options began to be understood. The app actually does what it says that it can do – nothing and nothing less. Unlike traditional social media platforms, the Kyu app creates a more intimate sharing experience where your memories only invite you to see them, they appear to be. As mentioned earlier, the app allows you to sew your clip simultaneously into highlight reels, which helps the creators and non-producers to make a consistent statement from their daily capture.
Kyu Camera Review: A high specific capture device
In an era where we are drowning in digital materials, the Kyu camera only offers a refreshing option for the construction of material for memory conservation. By limiting how much we can occupy, it encourages us to do more current and deliberate about the moments that we choose to make monuments. Although its obstacles may seem restrictive to some people, others may help to completely dedicate a device that is dedicated to help us to focus on what really means in our daily life.
Kyu camera is not trying to compete with your smartphone camera or professional devices. Instead, it is made for its category, mindful memory capture, for you and those who matter to you. For those overwhelmed by endless camera rolls and social media feeds, it can be exactly what they need.

The real question, of course, if it succeeds is ready to do. I used to use my smartphone to get similar results that I was found to be almost meaningless Kyu. With my phone, I can do a lot of the same stuff and means less devices to carry, less steps to get working footage (you don’t need to import on your phone because it is already there), and I have internal versatile talent to share anything that I capture with selected friends or share on social, which they need to have the need to have the need of Kyu app.
It seems to me that Qi is aiming to aim at my generation as a goal, but I really feel that it will either appeal for a much older demographic, which is not closely tied to its phone (because it does all the work to keep the clip together for them and it is a small or no small “creative” or no one can work in any way, because it can not work in any way
The Kyu camera is priced at $ 299 and is currently available for pre-order in the United States. Already with 400 units in Japan, the company plans to start US delivery in July 2025, although the exact delivery dates may be different.
Kyu camera goes into everyone to hug a niche
The Kyu camera will eventually be part of a broad group of interconnected products. For example, the company is working on a fellow product QU TouchA physical device to see the content captured on Kyu camera. It is very specific in its design and purpose, like the camera.
The company’s philosophy is very much liked how someone once described Japanese cooking: Instead of adding materials to improve the taste of food, the prevailing topic of Japanese preparation is to ask how far it can be taken and left with something delicious. Kyu has snatched himself away in the full bare requirement of the same task, which is basically a counter for every camera or electronic device designed today. It is a highly concentrated product, but it means that it is not particularly suited to use different -desires or matters.
It will either either echo with a user or close them immediately. It is difficult to see a middle ground.
What are the options?
When you can say that Kyu competes with every smartphone and camera on the market, it will be highly redective. Yes, it is a camera, but it is also providing a unique user experience that is not found anywhere else. The closest I can think that the basic value of Snapchat is proposed as the time is limited when you can capture a clip, but “the short video clip captures” actually doesn’t sufficiently suggest what Q does and with Snapchat, those memories, by design fleeting.
Kyu does not want you to have memory fomeo and all clips are preserved provided you want to preserve them. In that sense, it is more like a combination Meta Re-Ban Smart Glasses And Snapchat, except that it is not plugged into a huge public social network.
Should you buy it?
Perhaps. The price is just in the limit where a person is going to think of some time about it before killing the “buy” button and must be a very specific type of person to appreciate you to provide a Kyu camera. But if this type of unique memory protection resonates with you, then there is nothing like a Kyu camera.
