Five things to see in Paris on Sunday – National
PARIS – From the Canadian women’s soccer team playing under a massive six-point penalty to the chance to win more medals in the pool, here are five things to watch at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, July 28:
TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD
Canada’s women’s soccer team will face host France in Saint-Étienne with its hopes of winning the Olympic title again in serious doubt. FIFA has stripped Canada of six points, the equivalent of two wins, following the spying scandal that has cast a shadow over the start of the Games for the Canadian Olympic team. FIFA has also suspended head coach Bev Priestman and two other Canadian team staff members for one year and fined Canada Soccer 200,000 Swiss francs ($313,000 CAD). The scandal erupted after two Canadian team staff members were caught using a drone to film two New Zealand practices. Canada beat New Zealand 2-1 to open its tournament.

REIGNING CHAMPION
Canada’s Maggie Mac Neil will look to defend her Olympic title in the women’s 100-metre butterfly final. The 24-year-old from London, Ont., finished third in her semifinal heat on Saturday and tied for fourth in qualifying time. Canada is looking for another medal in the pool after Toronto’s Summer McIntosh won silver in the women’s 400-metre freestyle on Saturday.

DREAM TEAM 2024
The star-studded United States men’s basketball team will play its first game at the Paris Olympics against Serbia at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy near Lille. The Americans will be hoping to have Kevin Durant in their lineup. He has missed all of his team’s exhibition games with a calf injury. Even if Durant can’t play, the United States will have a formidable team led by LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Joel Embiid. Serbia’s roster includes Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic.

SECOND SERVICE
All of Canada’s tennis players are scheduled for Sunday after rain halted play on all outdoor courts at Roland Garros on Saturday. Of the affected matches, four featured Canadians. Felix Auger-Aliassime’s men’s singles opener, Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu’s women’s singles matches and a doubles match between Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski are now part of an impressive list of matches scheduled for Sunday. They join Canadian veteran Milos Raonic, whose first-round match is still on the schedule despite the disruption.

WELCOME TO THE CARPET
Canadian judoka Kelly Deguchi will make her Olympic debut in the women’s -52kg event at the Champ-de-Mars Arena. Deguchi, who lives and trains in Japan, won silver in the event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Her sister Christa, who is the world’s top-ranked judoka, will make her Olympic debut Monday in the -57kg category.
