Kax has announced its new M-meter, which is a modern version of the old analog leika M-meter, and I can’t help, but think about that line from Bob Focus biopic all that jazz: “Everything old is new again.”
If you are unfamiliar with the old leicometer, let’s put a dive into the early adulthood of the leak. The first M-Mount Body-In fact, every M-mount till M5 was body-meterless. The initial leakage photographers had to rely on analog handheld meter to get a proper exposure, use the “Sunny 16” rule, or simply guess one best. Leica solved the problem with analog meter with a relatively small, top-mounted series that would clip on the top plate and connect to the shutter speed dial. It was a fairly beautiful solution, but it was not right. First, the meter went to scratch the top plate of the camera – not a problem for serious shooters, but a major problem for camera collectors.
Second, and perhaps more serious, the issue is that as they are old, they became an incredible tool to measure light. First the lesamators were only disabled dials for shutter speed dial, but they were self-governed by a selenium cell and did not require any battery. The latter models, such as the leakomators MR, were especially designed for M bodies, were more sensitive, and were batteries. The problem with the older cellenium cell light meter is that, with adequate exposure, they can begin to lose stability and be incredible.
What I have seen-from both the content and online-the Kax M-Meter Leika repeats the measurement, form and function of MR, but updates it with a modern digital meter. According to Cax, “The new M-meter is a mild meter designed for meterless leika M bodies. Inspired by the iconic leika Mr. meter, the M-meter couple for easy operation with your leak’s shutter speed dial. The 1.3-inch OLED screen displays all readings and information, while the built-in settings allow adaptation to your shooting style. In addition, it is powered by a rechargeable internal battery that provides ten -hour battery life. The top has a 1.3-inch OLED display, which seems to be easier and faster to read than the dial system of the old Mr Meter. According to the press content, the battery can be charged through the USB-C cable, changed, and easy to the source. It is being introduced in chrome, black chrome and black paint (possibly a flattery black).
I have not yet got a chance to try it, but I am optimistic. Last year, I bought Cax Rapidwinder and found that it is very well to engineer and easy to install. Within the next few weeks, I hope that I will be able to place my hands on one and compare it with other modern and classic light meters. But i’m optimistic this item For other reasons – this is one of many items that have emerged in the catering for the Classic Laika analog system in the previous year. This is a trend that I hope will continue. I like shooting on my old M3S, for both and for work, and it is always cute to see new items that keep that old war in trenches.
