Behind the photo: Desert X at night with Star Trails

An unusual soul service station in the desert. Long -term lines. Real light painting. We take you behind the curtain to tell you how you can also make such photos.

We will find out how I used light painting to illuminate the image. Then we will also discuss how we made Star Trails. And of course, we will discuss what is in the photo, and just the desert x exactly what is really!

What is light painting?

I lit up Sol service station, an art installation made by artist Alison SarUsing “light painting”. This phrase is often used to describe any addition of light for a night photo. In fact, however, light painting refers to a technique that uses a light source in one hand to illuminate a view during a long risk. Your flashlight is your paintbrush, and you are quite literally painting the scene with light. Similar to a film director, you control what you illuminate and what you keep in the shade using light in your hand. Night photographers have used this technique for several decades.

Let’s see how I went about this image about light painting.

Handheld light

If you paint your subject at around 90 degrees angles, you can make great details and depth. To create symmetric shadows, I just lit the soul service station from the left for several seconds using a handheld Protomachin LED 2 LightI then ran to the right and copied the same distance and angle as on the other side. Note how you can see light on both sides of the gas pump and support the poles, while the shadow remains in the middle?

For good remedies, I also portrayed the signal with red letters on the right. I also used an angle of 90 degrees on the right. You can see the shadow of the letters raised.

Shh! Do not tell anyone that I did this!

For my surprise, the rear of the gas pump were permanently illuminated. While it looked good in my first picture (below), I did not want it in every single one. What to do? I tapped a black waste bag to cover the light using gafar tape so that it would not damage the gas pump. When I was photographed, I made sure to close it!

While reviewing my first photo, I smiled feeling that the North Star was almost straight at the station! Encouraged, I started installing a camera to set a sequence of photos to make some star trails!

Why are there stars in a circle?

The photo reflects the clear speed of the stars for a long time. This movement is caused by the rotation of the Earth. The camera was pointed properly to the north. Therefore, this special photo reflects the obvious speed of the stars around the northern stars, or the stars around Polaris, which is located in the center. These are called “Star Trails”.

By the way, this picture was a happy accident. While I knew that I was pointed more or less north, I did not realize that the North Star Sol was almost fine at the Service Station! As I was reviewing some pictures, I noticed that they were moving around the North Star, and it was almost focused on top of the art installation. I decided to live extra late and do some star trails.

Another reason to carefully review your photos, especially when the night photography!

How do we make Star Trails?

Star trails can be made in many ways. Here, I used a method called “stacking”. This is done using you On the tripod Taking the camera and photos several minutes after another (or hours, if you want). Then you load them in a free program like StarStaxOr you can use Adobe Photoshop (not free, forgive!). Either the program adds your gradual images to a single image that shows the trails of stars perfectly.

For example, each picture of this scene was 90 seconds long at F/8 ISO 200. I took sixteen pictures in succession. When I added them to Photoshop, it was as if I had done a single 48 -minute exposure. But since they are stacked, the camera sensor does not heat so much, and the result is a “cleaner” image.

Although I love StarStax, I usually use Photoshop. This is because among other things, I can use layer masks to remove things such as airplane trails and unknown lights from incoming cars. But StarStax is excellent, and it is extremely simple to use. And have I mentioned that it is free?
