Before and after: A crumbling farmhouse gets a second chance against all odds


Had it been anyone else, he would have torn it. Not Hardwijs.

A destruction. A write off. Abandoned. Condemned. That’s how most people would describe the dilapidated, moldy shack outside Sebastopol, California, which was listed for sale in February 2020.

Nigel and Jane Hardavige bought it anyway.

Something special was felt when the semi-retired couple came to view the property. They were looking for a rural place where they could settle down and travel, now that their three children were grown and their respective roles in the worlds of film and nonprofit tutoring were less intense. At this stage of life, it was less important to be close to the action, and more important to have an off-the-grid space to write, knit, and pick mushrooms.
