Australian Open Star Kimberly Birrell cried after being thrown off course before her first round match.
Birrell was set to face Anna Kalinskaya in the first round. However, the world number 16 withdrew his name shortly before the match.
Eva Liss, the lucky loser, was called on to play at the 11th hour and defeated Birrell 6–2, 6–2.
A tearful Birrell said afterwards: “Obviously very disappointed not to be at my best today.
“It was a difficult situation. If I could play the match again I would love it. I think it could have gone differently, but you know, it is what it is.
“I had prepared to play the role of Anna. He is really an amazing player. I knew I was in a fight against him, and I had done my research and talked a lot with my team.
“Unfortunately to find out that she backed out and I was playing someone completely different, it upset me. But, in saying this, his position was also similar to mine.
“I take responsibility for not being able to handle it. Wasn’t my best day…it felt like it was taken away from me. (It’s) something I can definitely learn from.”
