In the latest Android Auto update, Google is widely rolling out new music players for all apps, including Spotify, Apple Music, and other apps.
Android Auto 13.4 has been rolling out for about a week now, and it brings with it some of the first noticeable changes we’ve seen on the platform in quite some time. As we first reported last week, it includes some Material U accent colors throughout the systemHowever, apart from this, the music player on Android Auto has also got a new design.
On Android Auto, all audio apps share the same core design for the music player. The buttons may change, but the layout remains the same for the benefit of the driver, who doesn’t have to re-learn the layout for each app, which can be frustrating behind the wheel. Since Android Auto’s 2023 redesign, the music player (pictured above) hasn’t changed much, but the Android Auto 13.4 update is giving it a fresh look.
In Android Auto 13.4, the music player has moved the album art to the left, opening up space next to it for a track progress bar, with the track title, artist, and time below it as before. The text is also a little small to fit. Below that, the buttons have also changed to take up the full width of the display, but they’re largely the same as before.
The main change is to the location of the track progress bar.
Below, the new UI is illustrated with Spotify, but the changes should apply to all audio apps on Android Auto.
This new design also features the updated Android Auto font, which recently went into effect.
This could be a sign that Google is moving closer to its “Car Media” update, which is expected to allow Android Auto to play local media from the car, including radio stations. As we reported earlierHowever, there is still no sign of this update going live.
