Located in the bustling area of Soho, a thoughtfully designed 2,000 sq. ft. loft emerges as a blend of modern elegance and playful charm. With three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a home office, this residence embodies the vision of its Dutch and Finnish owners, who sought to combine their European roots with the vibrant spirit of New York City.
The journey of this transformation started accidentally after purchasing a property originally designed Alexander Butler Design ServicesWhen subscribers discovered a magazine feature showcasing Ghislaine Vinas’s specific design work in exactly the same apartmentHis mastery of color, coupled with his Dutch heritage, resonated deeply with him. The architectural enhancements and interior details were guided by the couple’s desire for a space that was simultaneously luxurious, comfortable, and reflective of their Nordic and Dutch influences.
Throughout the loft, the predominantly white color scheme provides a canvas for exploring texture and form. In the primary bedroom, painted white brick walls match the cozy wool chairs and ceiling adorned with ornate tin details. The addition of a playful yet sophisticated light fixture ties the elements together, creating a tranquil retreat. The living area echoes this approach, with luxurious materials like Mongolian wool pillows and shag carpet adding layers of tactile comfort.
Given the apartment’s limited natural sunlight, the design team used white and cream tones to evoke an airy, light-filled environment. This thoughtful palette enhances the feeling of openness, while carefully crafted accents add personality and whimsy. Sculptural details, such as the Celti Nose sculpture in the hallway and Ingo Maurer’s winged light bulb chandelier above the dining table, reveal the clients’ penchant for humor and the unexpected. The space also includes Leblon Delion’s Uncle Scrooge gold chrome duck sculpture and a striking Marco Grassi piece, “Umbra,” that fills the dining area with golden warmth.
The home office is a standout feature, brought to life with vibrant jungle-themed wallpaper of Timorous Beasties. The dynamic design is balanced by soft green chairs from Swedish brand Hem, reflecting the couple’s preference for bold yet soothing elements. In the TV room, black and white celebrity portraits create an engaging visual narrative, transforming the space into a gallery-like enclave.
Art plays a central role throughout the home, with each piece chosen to evoke emotions and enhance the ambiance. Prominently displayed in the bedroom is a portrait of Kate Moss with angel wings, a work by SN that is both evocative and calming. In the primary bathroom, marble surfaces meet the intricate “Equinox wallpaper” by Finnish designer Klaus Haapaniemi & Co., blending refinement with a touch of joy.
