Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl announces engagement, posts photos from beachside proposal


Less than three weeks after the Edmonton Oilers reached game 7 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final, the team’s German superstar center revealed that he and his girlfriend were engaged.

Leon Draisaitl posted photos on Instagram on Thursday of him on a beach proposing to Céleste Desjardins.

The message simply reads, “Forever,” followed by a heart emoji. The message indicates that the couple is on the island of Mallorca in Spain.

The official German NHL account congratulated the couple with a message on social media who says “love is in the air”.

Draisaitl, 28, helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final this summer, the team’s first such feat in 18 years. The club ultimately lost the championship to the Florida Panthers.

Draisaitl is entering the final year of his current eight-year contract with the Oilers. Since the NHL playoffs ended late last month, hockey commentators have been wondering if or when the beloved Oiler will sign a contract extension with the team.

In the days since the playoffs ended, Edmonton Oilers CEO of hockey operations Jeff Jackson said negotiations have not yet begun with Draisaitl. He added that he will likely speak with his agent at the NHL draft.

“I think it’s extremely important that the general manager is in place before we get into this, because I’m sure Leon and his representatives will want to know what the vision is, who the general manager is going to be, all those kinds of things. It’s a big change,” Jackson said on June 27.
