Below, we chatted to some interior designers and shared how to pretend to be a minimalist.
hide your clutter
Piles of clutter can become an eyesore in any home space, so when it comes to streamlining your space, Anna Tatcioni, principal interior designer at Decorilla, recommends hidden storage options.
“Clutter is one of the biggest obstacles to achieving a clean, minimalist look, so being able to put away small but essential things is one of my best tips,” says Tatcioni.
Tatcioni suggests opting for heavy-duty floating shelves or hidden drawers in seating areas and beds that can be easily lifted to store extra pillows, blankets or other items you don’t need on a daily basis. Can.
Jennifer Jones, principal designer at Niche Interiors, agrees. She says the key to being a minimalist is being able to hide the clutter that comes with daily life.
It will be essential to ensure that you have plenty of closed storage in your home such as built-in cabinets, side tables with drawers or large sideboards.
Whether it’s dedicating a kitchen drawer to storing mail, or storing dog treats and leashes in unused shelves, be sure to optimize all of your storage units. Jones also likes to use baskets and bins to tuck items inside her closed cabinets for easy access.

stick to simple color palettes
Tatcioni emphasizes how minimalism is about a “less is more” approach to interior design, so she recommends sticking to simple color palettes. When it comes to choosing paint colors, aim to choose three favorite colors to create a balanced palette.
“This leaves some room for variation in terms of decor and complementary colors that help open up a space or add dimension,” Tatcioni says.
If you choose all neutral tones but still want a burst of color, you can incorporate vibrant colors with decor accents like lamps, curtains and bedding. Since these items can be changed according to the season or whenever you want to refresh, you can experiment with different patterns and textures.
Be selective about your decorations
When it comes to decorating your space, you’ll want to be intentional and selective with your home accessories. Tatcioni says overdoing it can make the room feel busy or even overwhelming.
Depending on the size of the surface, Tatcioni recommends placing no more than three or four accessories on display.
“Choose plain patterns for rugs, textiles, and artwork to maintain that defined calm that is often associated with minimalism,” says Tatcioni.
