Why you need to clean the bottom of the deck
Usually, you will clean the deck more often than any other type of maintenance, so you should scrub at least once a year, rinse, apply cleaner, and clean both the top and bottom of the deck.
“It is necessary to clean the issues under your deck to prevent issues and create a place to live external living,” says IBP, LLC owner. “Depending on the type of deck you have – wood or overall – you can DIY your own deck cleaning solution.”

What happens if you do not clean the bottom of the deck?
Generally, the deck should be cleaned at least once a year, although it is also a good idea that the deck is every time to get rid of dust, leaves, or other debris, which can fall on it.
If you only clean the top of the deck and forget to clean the underside, it can give rise to various types of problems, which can weaken the structure and make the deck less attractive for regular use.
“Over time, mold, mildew, algae, grim, and other elements make buildups under your deck and on your deck boards,” Kail says. “If left, this buildup can trap moisture, causing wood rot, structural damage and even insect infections.”
How to clean the bottom of the deck
Clean the area
Before you start cleaning the deck, remove any item that you are sitting on the deck or can be stored under the deck.
Similarly, if there are any nearby plants that you want to save, cover them with plastic drop clothes.
Remove loose dirt and debris with a broom or blower
Get rid of dust, dirt, leaves or even cobwews from any loose debris using a broom or leaf blower.
“When doing so, you should look for loose fasteners, damaged wood, or other potential items that need to be repaired and should take care of those first,” called Kail.
Rub down the deck and mix the cleaning solution
Spraying under the deck along the garden hose will help remove any remaining debris that is remembered with a broom or blower. This step also helps prepare the surface for cleaning solution.
“Use two gallons hot water, two cups of powder oxygen bleach, and a quarter cup dish soap (ammonia-free),” Kail says, specific to wooden ornaments.
For overall ornamentation, he recommends a cup of white vinegar, a gallon warm water and a quarter cup baking soda.
Apply cleaning solution
Once the bottom of the deck is rinsed and the cleaning solution is ready, you can start applying the solution to the underside of the deck. Although it may be a little longer than a little more time, the best results are usually obtained using a scrub brush, soft sponge, or light sprayer to apply the cleaning solution.
“If you are using a homemade cleaning solution, avoid applying it with power washer or pressure washer as uncontrolled granules can cause a clogue,” Cal says. “As you apply the solution, use a generous amount and brush it in a lather.”
Scrub stuborn stock-on grime
After applying the cleaning solution, you can see some areas that seem particularly dirty or which may contain stuck-bits. Using more cleaning solutions and scrubbing these areas with a rigid-brush brush can help in removing any stubborn dirt, light staining and grim.
Clean the bottom of the deck
Give approximately 15 minutes of cleaning solution to work before bringing the garden hose out again. Use a spray nozzle to direct the flow and help increase water pressure.
When you are ready, spray under the deck to clean the dirt and frozen dirt in the year. If you find that any spot that still needs additional attention, repeat the previous stage until you are satisfied with the results.
Change the item after the deck dries
The deck will be wet immediately after cleaning it, so you will have to wait until you completely dry both the top and bottom of the deck before changing any items you removed.
This will usually take a few hours depending on temperature, humidity and current weather conditions. Once the deck dries, take these items back to your original place and keep any cleaning equipment or products away.
